StarLanterns.net is a division of Whirled Planet, Inc. Located on the Garden Isle of Kauai, we have been the premier purveyor of star lamps since 1996. Started as a way to pay for travel, this family-owned business is run by Mike McGinnis. He travels to India, Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, and other Southeast Asian countries several times per year.
Our star lanterns, silk lamps, paper lights and accessories are all manufactured and imported specially for us. We visit the factories regularly to ensure proper working conditions are maintained. We have long-standing relationships with the families and villages where our goods are produced. Your purchase helps to maintain a quality standard of living in the country where it is hand-crafted.
We are a small company that cares about our customers. We guarantee that if you are not completely delighted with anything you receive from us, we will refund your money no questions asked. As long as you return the item to us in its original condition, we will promptly credit your card or PayPal account (less shipping charges).
For over 1000 years, Hindus in India have celebrated Diwali. Also known as the festival of lights, it is a time when families come together and celebrate. Imagine a combination of Independence day and Christmas.
The significance of Diwali comes from the Ramayana, one of Hinduism's holiest texts. In it, Rama triumphs over the forces of evil to save mankind. Kind of like a Hindu Superman, his victory is celebrated symbolically with firecrackers and all sorts of candles, lanterns and lights. The lights symbolize the triumph of Good over Evil, of light over darkness.
The star lanterns shown on this site, also called star lamps, are each handmade in India. They were created as part of this ancient celebration, but have taken on a life of their own in Western culture. They have been featured on HGTV and on MTV.
These happening hanging lanterns are a great way to spice up a bedroom, livingroom or dorm room. They are also great for parties and weddings. They can be subtle in solid white or stunning with tissue paper cover cut outs that look like stained glass when lit.
